New at WordCamp SLC: Workshops!

We’re doing something new this year for WCSLC — workshops. What is a “workshop”, you say? I’m glad you asked!

Workshops are informal, low-key, demo-based presentations. They will be held in a smaller room, with more time for direct interaction with the presenter and one-on-one questions and answers. The format will be a lot like a presentation you might see at a WordPress meetup. It also gives us a way to provide more options for you guys who want to see great content and presenters. Some presentations work better in this smaller, more intimate format and we’re excited to be offering something new.

Over the next couple weeks we’ll be introducing you to our workshop presenters like we did for our speakers. Stay tuned!

Speaker Announcement: Lindsay Bayuk

Lindsay lives in Phoenix, Arizona where she leads the product  team at PureChat, a live chat API and WordPress plugin that is designed to help small businesses generate leads and get more sales (managed WordPress hosting provider, Pagely, recently published an excellent review of PureChat here). Before joining PureChat in May, she lead the product marketing and product management teams at Infusionsoft. She has a long and decorated history with product design and marketing and is passionate about entrepreneurship and helping small businesses succeed.

Speaker Announcement: Guy Warner

Guy is a self-taught developer who is currently the Senior Software Engineer for MOJO Marketplace. Before joining MOJO, he worked as a developer and software development manager for Blendtec. Like a lot of us, he got his start freelancing and then starting his own development agency before getting a “real” job. Now he helps maintain MOJO’s system that handles thousands of WordPress installs every month.

Speaker Announcement: Jeff Stieler

Jeff comes to us all the way from Park City, where he’s a Lead Application Developer for clients like CBS, The Pioneer Woman, and Sony. When he isn’t coding for work, he’s often coding for fun and has contributed to WordPress core, the WordPress iOS app and the WordPress Codex as well as other open source projects.

Speaker Announcement: Shayda Torabi

Shayda is from Austin, Texas, where she’s part of the marketing team for WPEngine. She’s spoken at this year’s WordCamp Milwaukee and will be speaking at WordCamp Vegas the week after WCSLC, but she’s travelled all over the world to attend WordCamps and meet with the WordPress community. She is a long-time WordPress user and blogger and can be found on her food blog Dine With Shayda.

Speaker Announcement: Ryan Sullivan

2 years ago, Ryan founded WP Site Care — a dedicated WordPress support agency that you can use for everything from regular maintenance to fixing your broken theme. Since then, WP Site Care has earned rave reviews and built a small army of loyal followers.

Nothing in business has been more gratifying for Ryan than building a team and seeing the people around him thrive and grow. “The first few years running WP Site Care have been a total rollercoaster,” he says, “and I’m looking forward to many more years of business thrills to come, as well as the future of WordPress as a whole.”

Be sure to give Ryan a big “thank you” when you see him in September, WPSiteCare is also one of our local sponsors!

Speaker Announcement: Mika (Ipstenu) Epstein

Mika — or Ipstenu, as she’s better known on the Internets — is well known throughout the WordPress community. She’s spoken at many WordCamps but is possibly best known for being one of the members of the plugin review team. She’s currently known as the Half-Elf Support Rogue for DreamHost where she spends equal time evangelizing WordPress and responding to WordPress support issues. She even manages to find time to write — both on her blog, halfelf.org, and in the form of ebooks that you can purchase and download from her store!

We’re incredibly excited to have her at WordCamp Salt Lake City!

Meet with local WordPress peeps!

Can’t wait for WordCamp? Neither can we. Did you know that you can hang out with your local WordPress devs, users, and gurus twice a month for free?

UtahWP is your local WordPress meetup group. They have meetings in Draper at the MOJO Marketplace offices and Orem at the UVU Business Resources building. Every month, a speaker comes and presents on topics ranging from WordPress development to picking a good WordPress plugin or theme. Meetups are organized through the Meetup.com group and everyone is welcome. The Draper group generally meets on the last Wednesday of the month, and the Orem group meets on the second Thursday. RSVPing isn’t required, but it’s nice to let the organizers know so they know how much pizza to order. 🙂

Slack is what all the cool kids are doing these days, right? UtahWP also has its very own Slack, so you can hang out virtually with your local WordPress community. To join the Slack channel, you’ll need Slack (but that’s okay, desktop and mobile apps are available or you can just use the web app), and just fill out this form on the UtahWP site. There’s even a channel on the UtahWP Slack just for WordCamp SLC discussion.

Come hang out and meet some WordPress locals
